The Stichting Muziek in de Nicolaas (SMN - the Music Foundation of the St. Nicholas Church) was established in 2000.
Its purpose is to facilitate the use of the St. Nicholas Church for the presentation of choral and instrumental music
of a high standard. It aims to do this by organising frequent concerts and regular choral services.
The 19th century St. Nicholas Church - recently magnificently restored and renovated - provides a prime setting for this goal.It is one of the most beautifully decorated churches in Amsterdam, has a fine acoustic and an excellent pipe organ. Its prime location (adjacent to Amsterdam's Central Station) makes it easily accessible for many.
Choral evensong is sung every Saturday at 5pm from September to June.
Evensong is one of the official services of the Anglican Church. It was first published in 1549 and later revised in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and essentially combines elements of the Roman Catholic vesper and compline services into a single service.
Choral evensong is the name given to the service when a choir sings the majority of the service to musical settings - as in the St. Nicholas Church.
The admittance of Choral Evensong is free of charge.

Throughout the year concerts are also frequently held (choir and organ).
Admission to the concerts and evensongs is free of charge.
The financing of the St. Nicholas Church Music Foundation is largely via the voluntary exit collections taken after the concerts and services as well as donations from benefactors.

A significant portion of the music presented is under the direction of the music director
and organist of the St. Nicholas Church, Michael Hedley.
Mr. Hedley was trained in the English choral tradition (Newcastle Cathedral, Guildhall School of Music) and appointed to his present position in January 2000.
To complement the work of the St. Nicholas Music Foundation, Mr. Hedley established and directs the choirs in St. Nicholas Church. These choirs, in turn, have joint responsibility for singing the regular Saturday Choral Evensongs at 5pm.
The choirs associated with the Music Foundation of the Nicholas regularly have vacancies
for singers of professional and amateur status. Also, from time to time we need deputies who are good sight-readers.
The Collegium of Cappella Nicolai has 16 members, sings 6-8 concerts per year and Choral Evensong on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.
Rehearsals on Thursday evenings.
The Chorale of Cappella Nicolai has 18 members and sings Choral Evensong on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.
